Today is Sweetest Day. Never heard of it? I hadn’t either until five years ago or so. It’s not as flashy as Valentine’s Day. Smaller. Quieter. But is it really necessary? How many holidays do we need to remind us to appreciate our loved ones?
I think we need more. Two days a year to officially show someone you love them? Blah. We all need more love than that. I think every single day should be Sweetest Day. I’m not talking flowers and candy, though they are lovely gestures. We should show our loved ones gentle appreciation and freely give hugs and kisses daily. We don’t always do that because we assume they will be by our side tomorrow, even though we know we might never again see a smile light up their face.
So give your kids a tight squeeze. Smother your partner with kisses and tell them how much you love them. Take a minute to collect your thoughts and thank them, from your heart, for everything they do for you. Be there in the moment and make it real. And don’t do it just today. Take that moment every single day, because when you stop appreciating and you begin taking someone for granted, that’s when it all slips away- either by someone’s choice or by misfortune.
I’m off to give my teen a bear hug and kiss Maya’s chubby cheeks a bazillion times.
Have a lovely Sweetest Day.
